Nature Needs You Capital Campaign

The Greenway grew organically for the first 15 years, developing programs as users requested them or as volunteers could provide. Over the last three years, the Greenway has become more deliberate and strategic in developing programs and activities so that the community can enjoy additional recreation and educational opportunities designed for all ages.

Our goal is to engage the community in program development, use and funding. To do this we have established a regional board of managers comprised of community leaders from North and South Carolina. And, at the end of April 2014 we launched a $15-million capital campaign. The funding will be used to establish:

Welcome and Education Center – Housing our growing educational programs, the center will also welcome and orient visitors to the Greenway. It will be located above Lake Haigler and will house exhibits presenting the history, culture and environment of the region.

Comporium Amphitheater – Located within walking distance of the historic Dairy Barn, The Comporium Amphitheater will house a wide variety of events including our student education activities, musical groups, theatre and nature programs. The artfully designed amphitheater features a 1,200 square foot stage complete with theatrical lighting and sound system, as well as adjacent storage and changing area. The structure is comprised of Douglas Fir timbers and natural Tennessee fieldstone for the foundation facade and walls. The Comporium Amphitheater site was selected to take advantage of the natural canopy, and the preservation of trees was a top priority. The area accommodates over 500 guests on blankets and lawn chairs, and offers a chance to relax among the natural surroundings and enjoy outdoor entertainment.

Discovery Trail – The current trails are natural surface and not as accessible for some users. This all-weather trail will provide a walking and cycling trail that serves families with children in strollers, senior citizens and will prove easier access for handicapped walkers and wheelchairs.

Adventure Center – The Adventure Center is developing as the staging area for Camps on the Greenway as well as a perfect destination for group outdoor education and corporate retreats.  In addition to its Low Ropes course, this location will continue to add amenities like zip-lines, alpine towers, and rock climbing walls that will enhance offerings to campers and groups.

Endowment – An endowment will provide needed scholarship support and revenue to assist in the maintenance of the property and facilities.
