Education Corner: Hiking & First Aid

As we enter the new year and start making our 2018 resolutions, it is a great time to start thinking about good new habits to start. One essential habit for those spending time outdoors is putting together (and carrying with you!) a simple hiking first aid kit. It is something we often don't think about until we desperately need it. Whether you choose to buy a small first aid kit, or put it together yourself there are a few things to remember.

Firstly, know what everything in your kit is and how to use it, otherwise it's not very helpful! Secondly, make sure you have it in a waterproof container - many first aid supplies are not much good once they're wet. Some things we recommend as you start your kit are; band aids, antiseptic swabs, sting wipes, allergy medication/cream, painkillers, electrolyte pills, rehydration packets, gauze and bandage, and medical gloves. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is a good place to start. Other things to consider that don't necessarily belong in a first aid kit, but are equally helpful - a fully charged phone and a trail map. Good preparation is key to any successful trip! Happy hiking this year!
