Volunteer Spotlight: Elizabeth Rockholt

At the Anne Springs Close GreenwaySM, volunteers are at the heart and soul of our mission, helping to connect people with nature through our many programs and activities. Among our incredible team of dedicated individuals, Elizabeth Rockholt has stood out among a host of amazing volunteers, having made a significant impact in the last decade of her involvement. With over 1,000 volunteer hours logged, Elizabeth’s commitment to the Greenway has been nothing short of inspiring.
Elizabeth’s active volunteer journey began in 2012, after participating in the Greenway’s South Carolina Master Naturalist class that is offered annually in partnership with Clemson Extension. One of Elizabeth’s earliest and most beloved roles has been leading guided hikes, aligning her love of the outdoors and naturalist training. Over the past eleven-plus years, Elizabeth has become an expert on the Greenway’s trails, its hidden gems and rich history. “I became so familiar with the trails and special places like the Grist Mill and log cabins that seeing them at times became like being with old friends,” she shared. “I especially enjoy passing on to others so many bits and pieces of Greenway lore that otherwise may be forgotten.”
Among her many contributions, Elizabeth’s work as a docent for the Faris-Coltharp and Graham cabins holds special meaning. In these historical spaces, Elizabeth helps visitors connect with the Greenway’s deep-rooted history, instilling in them a sense of gratitude for the area’s early settlers and their enduring legacy. “My greatest pleasure is meeting visitors and telling them about this wonderful place that has been such an essential part of my life for quite a while,” Elizabeth noted.
Elizabeth’s impact extends far and wide across the Greenway. From assisting the Natural Resources team through the Trailkeepers program and the Schweinitz’s Sunflower Census to volunteering at signature events like Earth Day, the Summer Concert Series and trail races, Elizabeth has been a steadfast contributor. She is also part of the new Greenway Ambassador program, sharing her love for the Greenway with visitors and members alike.
Elizabeth also treasures the moments she spent learning directly from Anne Springs Close, the Greenway’s founder. “A number of special times I was able to talk with Ms. Close, and I would take the opportunity to ask her questions,” Elizabeth shared. “She was a fountain of knowledge, and I learned so much from her about the history of the Greenway.”
Danielle Holmes, Volunteer & Internship Program Manager, well described Elizabeth’s contributions saying, “Elizabeth has an encyclopedia amount of knowledge. From leading nature hikes to being a wayfinder along our trails to serving as a docent for our historic cabins, Elizabeth is always willing to share her expertise and lend a hand. We are incredibly lucky to have her as a volunteer!”
Elizabeth’s story reminds us of the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on a community. Her efforts enrich the experience of every visitor and honor the legacy of the Anne Springs Close Greenway.
