Volunteer Spotlight: Sarah Melandro
At the Anne Springs Close Greenway, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s maintaining trails, assisting with events or supporting our educational programs, volunteers bring the Greenway to life in unique and meaningful ways. One such example is Sarah Melandro – a passionate, positive and endlessly helpful volunteer who has made a lasting impact across nearly every corner of the Greenway.
Sarah has been a weekly presence at the Greenway since she began volunteering about three years ago, though she’s been a member since 2017. A native of Charlotte, she and her husband, Michael, moved to Fort Mill 15 years ago. Together they run a small business in Charlotte, and Sarah also works freelance in TV and video production. Her flexible schedule has allowed her to dedicate countless hours to the Greenway.
From trailkeeping to special programs and events, Sarah is always willing to jump in wherever help is needed. You might find her picking up litter on the trails (“sometimes crazy litter,” as she says), helping riders in the Exceptional Equestrians program, entertaining children during horse barn birthday parties or zipping around in a golf cart at the Rooted Rhythm Concert Series. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her knowledge of the Greenway makes her an exceptional Ambassador at community outreach events and onsite programs.
When asked why she volunteers, Sarah’s answer is simple: giving back to a place that has given her so much.
“The Greenway has been my sanctuary—my place to reset and refocus when I felt overwhelmed with the real world,” she shared. “Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose. You know the old saying, ‘Do something for someone else’—it makes me happy to do so.”
She also emphasizes the variety of opportunities available for anyone considering getting involved. “You can do anything—trails, horses, farm, gardening, special events, races, parties, kids’ programs, and I bet you could even find some admin work if your passion is a good spreadsheet!”
Sarah’s favorite moments on the Greenway range from light-hearted adventures—like playing a sweltering round of disc golf with her brother and the disc getting hilariously lost in the woods—to heartwarming connections made with participants in our equestrian therapy programs. She’s even become somewhat of a trail trash treasure hunter, reporting quirky found items like toy trucks, vintage bottles, and her favorite find – a gold pleather sandal!
In addition to her time, Sarah generously supports the Greenway as a donor. She became a Friend of the Greenway in 2023—thanks to a thoughtful birthday gift from her husband—and enjoys the added benefits that come with being a Friend, like early access to special events and exclusive opportunities to learn from experts like Master Naturalist Andy Kane.
Sarah’s passion, versatility, and generosity embody the spirit of volunteerism at the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Her story is a reminder that there are so many ways to contribute—no matter your schedule, skillset or interests. Whether you’re drawn to nature, education, animals or event logistics, there’s a place for you here.
